Two Points on Children's Study

The first point: Recently, some friends have asked, since there is a large amount of literature proving that music can stimulate neurons in the brain, making them more active, therefore, would it be better for children to learn while listening to music? Some friends also say that when children tell them to listen to music, they have higher efficiency in memorizing. Our view is that it is not recommended for children to learn while listening to music. no matter when child is learning or listening to music, it requires the child's brain to concentrate and enter what psychologists call a state of "flow" in order to achieve the best results. The human brain is a sequential processor and may not be able to focus on thinking about two or more complex issues at the same time, that is what Daniel Kahneman called "System 2". Even if all math, physics and chemistry belong to science, who can simultaneously think about mathematical issues and physics or chemistry issues? Learning and thinking training through music are also complex issues. If we only consider the biological (neuroscience) function of music, although music can stimulate neurons in the brain to be more active, the conduction and conversion function of neurons is mainly used for conversion of action and emotion. If the brain is in a state of fatigue, tension, anger, and depression, listening to music can quickly transition this state and emotions (but it is also important to pay attention to which types of music to listen to, some of which may actually have the opposite effect), but during deep learning, which is when the brain is in a "flow" state, attention is highly concentrated, adding music at this time will hint the brain to pay another attention to other tasks, thereby disrupting attention. For memorizing, if people wants to memorize information with coherent meaning (logically related), it also requires the brain to concentrate. For random word memory, if the music sound can establish situational connections with the memorized words, it may help with word memory. However, there is currently no strong scientific evidence and research indicating that music has a real-time stimulating effect on the hippocampus, although some studies have found that, people who learn music have a bigger hippocampus than those who don't, but research has also shown that this mainly caused by music learners memorize music scores and fingering extensively, which makes their hippocampus bigger than that of ordinary people. Although some studies have shown that people who undergo long-term music training perform better in memory and intelligence than others, there is also no research showing that simultaneously listening to music while memorizing can improve memory efficiency. Therefore, our suggestion for this issue is that children should focus on their learning and not listen to music at this time. Instead, after a time learning, they can focus on listening to 10-15 minutes of relaxed, happy, interesting or lyrical music, which can quickly alleviate and repair the fatigue state of the brain and transition emotions. Of course, if we want to train our mode of thinking through music, we need a systematic approach, so that the brain's fatigue state could be repaired and emotions could be transitioned by the way during training.

The second point: We found that children generally experience mental tension and anxiety before exams, which significantly affects their performance during exams. In fact, not only children, but also we believe everyone will acknowledge that only when the brain is in a relaxed and energetic (active thinking) state can people do their work more comprehensively, constructively, and efficiently, It is impossible to do any work well in a state of tension and anxiety. Similarly, children's best state during exams is to keep their brains in a relaxed and excited state. Therefore, what methods can we consider to help children stay in this optimal state during exams? We found a very simple, practical, and effective way for that is to listen some relaxed, enjoyable, interesting, or lyrical music (Jupiter and Uranus in the planetary suite, Spring in the fourth season, Schubert's Serenade, etc.) before going to bed the night before the exam or before going out in the morning on the day of the exam. Listening to these music can immediately help alleviate tension and anxiety, it can also activate the brain, as these music can stimulate the nucleus accumbens of the brain and help with the appropriate secretion of several neurotransmitters (endorphins, dopamine, serotonin, adrenaline), but it is not recommended to listen to overly emotional and intense music. Of course, the optimal working state of the brain cannot help in situations where the knowledge points that should be reviewed but have not been reviewed. Therefore, the most important thing for children before the exam is still to make sufficient preparation for review, which will also increase their confidence during the exam and help the brain access to the optimal working state. Furthermore, it should be noted that the use of music cannot replace the role of sleep. Lack of sleep can seriously damage thinking ability. Although we advocate for the spirit of struggle, but it should be based on science.
